" Fears are growing that chip-and-pin credit card technology, which is designed
to cut plastic theft, is not as safe as we have been led to believe by card
companies.
The oil company Shell has suspended use of the technology in 600 of its petrol
stations after more than £1m was stolen from customers’ accounts by bogus
engineers who fitted chip-and-pin keypads with memory chips that logged
customers’ cards numbers and pin codes.
Eight people have been arrested in connection with the fraud, which is being
investigated by the Metropolitan Police cheque and plastic crime unit, and those
affected should be reimbursed by their banks.
However, the success of the fraud has raised fears that increasingly
sophisticated scams will be used to target consumers using the new cards.
The Association of Payment Clearing Services (Apacs) is playing down the gravity
of the incident, although it admits that the technology has failed in this
instance....................... "
