I am having some issues with the range of the Ademco 5804BDV 2-way fob. The
fob works fine inside the house, but fails receiving just 20 feet outside
the house. I installed the Ademco 5800TM according to the instruction
manual by placing it exactly 12 inches from the 5881EN receiver. Also, the
5881 is located at the highest point of the house near the front. However,
now that I am reading the instructions again, I am wonder what Ademco means
by

"Mount the 5800TM next to the RF receiver (between one and two feet from
the receiver's antennas)." (Vista 20P v3 Manual)

Should that statement be interpreted literally to mean mount the 5800TM
exactly between 12 and 24 inches away from the receiver, no more and no
less? If so, can any one suggest a way to improve transmission range?

Been a few years since I installed Ademco, but the requirement to mount the
5800TM next to the Receiver sounds correct. What type of surface are the
pair mounted on? What is behind this surface? What type of construction is
nearby? (metal beams, hidden pipes, ductwork, etc)

Sounds like a placement issue.

I've only done about 10 of them, and have always put them inside the alarm panel. Range is gonna depend on what the house is made of..etc. stucco has chickenwire under it, mirrors in the house are essentially like a sheet of metal, some houses use that foil backed insulation board...all gonna effect your receiver/transmitter range.

I don't think you have to get out your calipers to measure the distance from the reciever though - I think they mean don't mount it remotely.

Check the battery in the fob!

Yes, cannot be too close to the receiver. Cannot be too far. Just mount
them near each other is all, at least 1 foot away.

Problem you will be having is, the TM and BDs do not have any kind of
range as far as bi Directional goes. The button will arm and disarm or
whatever, far away, but getting a response will only work so far.

What ademco should have said was,

"Put the TM and Reciever next to each other, at least 1 foot distance
from each other. The location of these should be as close to the
location where you are normally arming or disarming from. If you have a
large concrete home for example, and you are arming and disarming from
both ends of it, recommended you install another set, one set at each
end. Certain physical conditions can cause the bi-drectional part of
the device not to function properly, such as steel within a wall, Air
Condition Ducts, among others. We recommend a simple 5804 4-button
keyfob in cases where you are unsure whether it will perform to your
required standards.

Hey - I'm gettting those problems too - Although I thought it was the
actual 5804BDV - I had one that would only very occasionally report
back the status - I just replaced it - Man I went through tech
support, thought it was high security mode, house ID etc, etc.
Does the 5800 TM need to be boosted?

Nope, you get what you get out of it, read my above post. This is why I
rarely quote them anymore, especially if it is a large home, or
concrete.

You can always add additional TMs and Receivers at other locations, or
relocate the existing ones nearer to where you typically arm/disarm
from, even if it has to go downstairs in the living room or garage if
that is closer to where you arm/disarm from outdoors (eg. Driveway,
Garage, etc), and add another in the bedroom/attic/panel area for
indoors. if its needed.

As far as I know, if you want an additional TM, you need an additional
Receiver to go with it. Ofcourse you can switch out your keypads for
the RF keypad which has a TM and RX built into it, if they are close to
the arm/disarm area, or you can simply use the same wire as the keypad
and add additinal RX and TM.
