Why my meter has a beeper?

I am attempting to build a portable electric lap steel guitar, and I found a nice set of electronics out of a hybrid battery/AC boom box. One of the speakers is nice and small, and will be perfect for my portable guitar. I tested it with my VOM which I had accidentally put on "BEEPER" or audible battery test. Instead of the speaker inside the VOM sounding off in its familiar 'whine", the speaker I was testing, sounded off in a slightly lower roar.

The speaker works! But I am wondering if the 5v speaker which is 6 ohms is supposed to sound off when this happens?

Your beeper mode or continuity test, may also function as a diode tester, as many do.
This range supplies a degree of current that the Ohms range does not, this enables it to check the validity of a diode, as there requires a degree of forward bias in order for the diode to conduct.
Many such as Fluke, indicate the forward voltage drop when testing a diode.
In any case the beeper mode supplies enough current to energize the speaker.
