Q about IDC connectors & ribbon cable

It's obvious (at least it seems so to me) that to make a ribbon cable with
two identical connectors, say DB25F, then the connectors get installed at
two ends of the cable in the same orientation on the same side of the cable.

What about mixing sexes. Suppose I have a DB25M and a DB25F. Does the same
rule apply? Or does one of them go in the opposite orientation? The other
side of the cable?

An easy way to think about this is to suppose you'll eventually want to
make a longer cable out of two M-F cables. Design for minimum smoke.
