old generator off tractor PTO

Has anyone tried connecting a small, under 10kw, generator to a tractor PTO?
I'm looking for something cheap until I can get money to buy a more
permanent solution.

I'm looking at a need to run my 1 hp well pump to water the animals and my
1/3 hp septic tank pump so we can use the indoor plumbing. I have thought
about just rigging a water pump to the PTO but that won't help me with the
septic tank problem.

My tractor has a duel speed PTO (540 and 1000 rpm) but IIRC a genny needs to
run at something like 3000 rpm which means some kind of gearing (chain and
sprocket or belt and pulley seem easiest).

Any info or suggestions would be great.

Actually if you look at a lot of the ready made pto generators....
You will find that a lot of the wieght on the generator is a redrive that
does the very ratio you are talking.
You can copy some of us piston steamers by taking a junkyard transmission
and plug it in backwards for a updrive.
For that small of a generator I would probably look in the lawn and garden
equipment junkbin.
If you was talking 50Kw ,then you would start looking at an old farm truck
manual transmission.
In either case, you are going to need either a drawbar bracket or a trailer
to mount your idea on .
And a ratio that would let you run the tractor governed back as much as you
can while pulling.
Less wear and noise for the engine with it just fast idling verse full
throttle.
A good volt and amp meter to set the throttle by.

Just buy a pto generator - common as dirt.

Missed the line about something cheap. Eight hundred bucks ain't what I
call cheap. I hoping to find a gen with a dead motor for close to nothing
(might not happen but I can hope). I'm thinking with what I have laying
around and a few more parts I could connect it to the PTO for less than $75.

Might go that way but I was hoping to go with a home built unit. It
shouldn't need to hold up for long if needed. I figure 20 mins every other
day to water the animals. Then 30 mins or so every day to cool down the
frig and pump down the septic tank

In either case, you are going to need either a drawbar bracket or a trailer

The plan is to weld up a frame to fit the 3 pt hitch

Maybe common as dirt but not as cheap as dirt.

Unless you're real lucky, you won't be able to do anything like that
for less than the cost of a stand-alone generator. Even if you come up
with a cheap PTO solution, you'll waste fuel running it. As Ulysses
said, new mid-sized generators can be had for under $400. Shop around
for a used one if you want to spend even less. For example, I have a
Honda EG5000 here (donated by a friend) that I'm probably going to
sell for $300. So you ought to be able to find a Generac or some such
for $200.

If you want to go home brew, don't forget that speed increases and
reductions can be had with belts and pulleys. Easier to fabricate than
a gear box. Have a look at a washing machine transmission also. (for
very small loads) Input speed of those is 1850 rpms (Usually), double
that and you're home.

It will take 4 to 6 hours of run time to cool down a frig..

www.northerntool.com sells a 7200 watt 14HP PTO (540rpm) generator
for $800.. (Item# 165951)
