Hi could anyone please tell me what the grey resistor/thermistor type thing is in the picture and why it would be heating up so much? Thank you in advance

It is most likely a power resistor, and it is expected to heat up, which is why it is spaced off the board for better airflow around it.

Thank you Bob
It's heating to the point of smelling burning. Is there a way of finding it's value?
Thanks again

Although it is hard to tell from that photo, it does not look burnt. Is the board operating normally?

To measure it you would have to disconnect one lead then use an Ohmmeter. Do you know what it is supposed to be? Are there any marking on it or on the board that would indicate that, or do you have a schematic?

The resistor itself looks ok, but the board below it (second pic) looks cooked, so clearly the resistor has been getting very hot for some time. Its soldered connections don't look too happy though.
