LED torches on Ebay - Are they a CON?

A friend bought one of these. I had a good look at it. When viewing
the LEDs from the front whilst on (I thought they were too bright to
do this?) I noticed that moving it from side to side, it appeared as
if the LEDs were not LEDs but separate lenses, with one bigger light
behind?

Now I did not want to take my friends light apart further than
removing the LED unit from the battery compartment
There appeared a central unit with wires strapped outwards.

Anyone closely examined one of these units at all?

I was looking at buying a 32 LED version from Ebay

It's the nature of LEDs with their integrated lens that they seem to act
as a single lens effect, but all the torches of this type that I've got
use individual LEDs.

Some have PCB's but one with 12 LEDs that I have uses a crimp system
with all the LED wires routed through holes in their plastic support.
