Encryped Radio

I could use a push in well any direction I guess. I'm considering building a radio that will encrypt the data and be de-encrypted at the receiving end. To be completely honest I don't know where to begin. Using an electronic circuit to encrypt data is not something I ever considered until a friend commented on the encrypted rolling frequency radios the military uses and I got to wondering If I could maybe build something similar but less complicated.

Is the signal audio?

microphone -> A-D -> encrypt digital signal -> modulate carrier -> transmit

receive -> extract signal -> convert to digital -> decrypt -> D-A -> speaker

much harder than that in practice, but there's *a* way to do it.
