Lasers and LEDs are two different things. There is no such thing as a
"laser LED"
LED = Light Emitting Diode
When they first came out, they were commonly called laser LEDs.
That quickly faded and mostly they are called laser diodes reserving
the term LED for non-coherent light emitters these days.
The word "photonics" includes such things as emission, transmission,
amplification, detection, modulation and switching of light.
Photonic applications include such things as barcode scanners, laser
levels, gyroscopes, rangefinders, welders, cutters, light shows,
and holographic art to name but a few.
Impossible to do optically without laying fiber across the planet or
using satellites (high latency with satellites makes this pretty
useless for most things).
The entire planet is already pretty much networked together; what's
your point? You want more bandwidth to South Chuckupistan, lay more
fiber to replace the copper.
Laser diodes have higher output and collimate better than LEDs.
