How do these things work ? From the brief glimpse we get of them, they
look like they are RF links - how many in the audience, and how do
they cope with data collisions etc, or are they polled, implying a Rx
in each unit as well as a Tx.

Wireless, as in 802.11x, can cope with multiple stations. Collision
detection is inherent and using CDMA and similar techniques multiple units
can co-exist on the same channel(s). A search will reveal lots of sites with
