I tried this method today on a scrap board. The component I removed was a BD9488F. I have not been able to remove one of these type chips before without damaging the leads or pads. This method worked like a charm and only took a couple minutes. I used wire salvaged from an inductor on the same board.

I bought a paint stripper gun, although it works a charm if you don't give too much heat, but it's not great either because the fan in it blows components off the pcb lol

I'll have to get a hotplate! Smd components are great but fiddly lol

I will be purchasing a hot air gun hopefully this month. Maybe it will work for what little I will be doing.
