Service contract question

Hi,
I would like to know if anyone can answer this question. We a have Brinks
security system installed at our home. We have been customers for the past
five or six years and have decided to cancel the service. My wife called to
do this and she was told that they wanted to come and remove the system from
our home if we were no longer going to subscribe to there service. They told
her that we in fact do not own the equipment even though we paid an
installation fee and also for extras at time of install. What is the truth.
Do we own the stuff or do they? If we told them we were moving they would
not come out to remove it! Are they just trying to strong-arm her into not
disconnecting service. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Kevin

The cover of the main panel box should answer your question

NO, they said they will remove it if you disconnect. If you're not using it,
what's the issue?

Rob-

My main issue would be the hole that's left... And I'd love to put a 9mm
hole in the head of a tech that cut those wires so short they can't be used
again without extending them.

Well it's not that we do not use it. It is the thirty something a month we
pay that we are looking to save. Sounds cheap I know but with one income and
a second baby coming we are looking to cut wherever we can. It seems like
the only time it goes off at night is when my daughter leaves a balloon
floating around that the motion picks up when the heater kicks on! I know
that they did not remove the system when my mother in law moved from her old
place and the new owners picked up on all the extras she got! I wonder if I
wait a bit then call them and say were moving?

Try keeping it in your pants, or get a second job.
Brinks isn't the bad guy because you're short on cash.
Brinks wants their equipment back, or they want to be paid for the use of it.
Either pay up, or give it back.

Yeah... You think you live in America or something?! Like you have the
freedom to procreate!? Jeez! Get back to work and pay your bills before I
send you in for "reconditioning"!

I agree. My sarcastic response was meant to punctuate his Orwellian
response. As if we live in 70's Communist Russia or something... (Or
Orwell's "Animal Farm")

Congrats on your 2nd child. And good luck to you with the Brinks thing.

brinks isnt the bad guy? ask my customer who moved into a house brinks did
an "inspection" said EVERYTHING was fine because it was, then they came out
to get her to sign up they said they needed to replace everything b/c the
guys didnt know how to handle a shock analyzer .. one guy starting cutting
wires in the attick b/c he claimed they were bad and old and their new
system couldnt use those wires, and antoher guy began cutting the wires at
the panel, not unscrewing them.. after 10 minutes, the guy in the attick
said hell with it, told the guy at the panel to stop, they both told the
woman they couldnt replace it without going completely wireless and charging
her some ridiculous amount.. she said put it back like it was they said
fine.. all they did was put back the battery, the keypad and zone 1 (front
door) to fool her .. she called me, i had to fix everything and i sent
brinks a bill for over $1000.

They paid me after a fight

Actually this example illustrates all too well something that homeowners
should be aware of. Bottom line, if you are having another company in to
replace an existing alarm, ALWAYS have them remove the old alarm, even if
it's simply to box it up to be picked up by the previous company. There a
lot of bad actors who will deliberately sabotage the wiring to make it much
more difficult for the second company to replace the system. As far as I can
see, this is done for malicious reasons only....ie: we didn't get your
repeat business, so we're going to take it out on you.....

I see it all the time....

I'll add a fourth option to Alarm Review's first three. Contact some
local dealers. Explain your situation. The cost of removing and
replacing the Brinks system will be much less than the cost of the
original install. You might be able to have the equipment swapped with
little or nothing up front while reducing your monthly payment. And
you should own this new equipment...make sure that's in the agreement.

Also, if you go this route, let the new installing company remove the
Brinks equipment and box it up for you. Brinks can then come and get
it, not having the opportunity to cut your wires short.

I routinely change-out Brinks systems, replacing the equipment for
nothing down and $19.95 to $24.95 per month, depending on how many
keypads/devices need to be replaced. You should be able to find
dealers in your area who would do the same

Are you talking about the smaller mom and pop type companies? I may have to
give this a try. Thanks for the input.
