problem with cd/dvd drive

This is probably the wrong ng but I'll start here with the local talent
unless someone can suggest a more on-topic forum.
I have an XP PC a month old with a Pioneer DVR-107D CD/DVD read/write drive
fitted internally..

It was fine when it was new. Now it will only read (and play) DVD movies.

It won't read audio CD's, it won't read CD-ROM's.

Can't even see what files are there using Windoze explorer. The icon does
not change with CD or CD-ROM whereas it does when I have a DVD in the tray.
There is some drive light activity when I insert a disk but it seems like
it's unable to read anything other than a DVD.
The device manager in Control Panel says it's working fine (of course!)
I've tried reloading the driver, I've upgraded the firmware to the latest
ver1.18 from the Pioneer website. Still no go.

Since I've had the PC I've installed all the latest service packs etc from
the Windows update site. Wonder if anything from there has something to do
with it?

I have to wait until Monday before I can take the box back whence it came.
Anyone got any ideas in the meantime?

Hi,

Drive is faulty. DVD players (and PC drives) employ two lasers -- one for
DVD disks and one for CD disks. CD one is bad in yours.

To make 100% sure it is not a Windows problem, try booting PC off your
WIndows Xp disk (you did get one, disn't you?).

You were right. CD laser WAS Wallaby Teds cousin (Roo Ted).
And the local assembler of PC's where I bought the machine bunged in a new
drive while I waited. Service with a capital S !
Thanks for the response.
Peter.
