Home biodigester plant/generator

Hi,

I am toying with the idea of building a home biogas digester and then
using the methane for heat or electiricty generation.

I live in a small 3 bedroom house, have front and back gardens, and an
allotment.

What I have access to in terms of organic waste is cooked scraps,
peelings, used teabags (lots of), and of course the weeds from the
allotment and bits of plant that we don't eat. (I have been known to go
picking nettles from paths).

What I do not have is any animals. I also am not keen on using human
manure.

I may be able to get hold of horse manure though.

What I want to do is produce methane, and compost from all my organic
waste.

I live in the South east of England, so ambient tempreture is temperate.

Has any one else done anything similar, if so what are your experiances?

Or, has any one got any info on this sort of thing. The info I have
found so far relies on me having pigs cows or chickens and on some
scale.

Ben, the Netiquette guidelines for signatures limits them to 4
lines maximum, including any blank ones, below the delimiter line.

If you are calling me Ben, it implies we have met face to face and are
friends, whilst the following implies that is not the case.
They are supposed to be signatures, not bulletin boards.

It isn't. It gives an email address at which I can be contacted, and as
far as I can tell one that is difficult to harvest. So that email
address only gets unsolicted email from the Labour party because being
impolite so far has not worked.
They aren't supposed to get in our faces.

It does not get in my face, but then I use tin as a news reader so it
shows up blue at the bottom of a post, so I don't generaly notice any
ones sognature.

That said, having been in computers for 27 years now, and having been on
usenet since 1997 I am fully aware that netiquette says that signatures
should only be 4 lines. However, I do feel I need to be able to be
contacted off group in some of the news groups where I post, and want my
email address to be clear.

If that realy is a big problem for you, **** off.
I've had a lot of experience with generating methane from plant
sources in a temperate climate. Fix your sig (permanently) and
I'll share it with you. I'll follow you around the Usenet for
a while to see if you really have, first, though.

No, if you are an arsehole, I can live without your advice.

Hmmmm...That's not very many posts, and some of them are
to tech groups. You are smelling like a troll.

However, if you do not limit the posts that way, you will see 4000 posts
for me. Not only that, but in a variety of groups. Quite allot are
technical, because my day job involves setting up servers running either
NetWare or Linux, and some programming in DBase.
And that anti-spam stuff in your sig is suspicious too.
Never seen anyone but a spammer get in people's faces
about how anti-spam they are.

Stop talking bollocks. You are either interested in sharing info on bio
digesters or you are not.
Notice that one of the groups he subscribes to is devoted
to one of the major MTAs, postfix. Spammers need to know
all about MTAs (Mail Transfer Agents, which are mailservers.)

Yes, I install and configure postfix lots, with amavisd-new
Anyone who wants to read an introduction to the only mail
filters that spammers and trolls can't beat should read
this short page:

http://home.earthlink.net/~alanconnor/elrav1/cr.html

Personaly I don't use that, you can use what you like, I sell a system
that uses spamassin, and amavisd-new using postfix as an mta.
If he's a spammer or troll, he will probably now tell you how
terrible those types of filters are and post the link to
a website put up by a spammer that 'proves' it.

No, can't be arsed to argue with a twat.
They really hate filters they can't beat, of course.
Ah, something we agree on.

Now **** off you irritating twat.

Let me guess: You've posted the link to "Karsten M. Self's"
anti-Challenge-Response web page.

No, I have not.
I tried to write a point-by-point reply to that page once, but it
just doesn't make any sense.

I can see why that would be the case.
So they post, for example, over-sized sigs and get in your face
if it suits them.

You follow people around posting a summary of their last years history,
and mentioning your own favorite way of dealing with spam.

I call that obsessive. Get a job and get a life.

Now that we have established yopu have nothing useful to say, I will
killfile you.

How do you know how many samples I have looked at on google?
And my other recent posts here were about home power...

I see. Well, I suspect that not very many people noticed as some seemed

Any way, I will now killfile you, as you are nothing but a fucking twat.

Given the proliferation of vastly oversized sigs these days, that's minimal.

Didn't get in mine.

Sheesh - everybody starts somewhere. He went to an awful lot of trouble for

Many thanks for your kind words...

That said, google have 4000 posts archived for me, over the last 9
years. I reckon that is a bit more than a start... : - )

LOL. My mistake for assuming anybody who'd bully someone for asking a
reasonable question would do their research properly :)

That's ok.

Someone in another group did post some webpages for me to look at as
well.

My aim is to reduce the amount that I send to landfill, and produce gas
and fertilizer at the same time. I am also going to have to work on
solar panels, and a good form of heat storage. Water seems to be a
favorite.

Well, to be fair, it seems to be producing more heat than light.

I was hoping someone would have some experiance of what it is I am
trying to do, but I suppose we will see.

I was hoping someone would too because I am also interested in this. I had
it explained to me recently but I didn't grasp the specifics, only the basic
principles. Something about a heavy lid floating on water above the gas
keeps the pressure steady. It's a mystery to me how you introduce new gas
or material to keep it going.

They are difficult to keep happy on a small scale. As for getting stuff
in and out of a typical reactor, you shove it in under water (liquid)
level, and remove it from the opposite end the same way, trying to
minimize air contact (you're working with anaerobic bacteria).
Eventually you need to shut it down and muck out what won't flow nicely
through of itself, so it's best to have at least two reactors, and they
need to be kept warm. There's plenty of information out there if you
DAGS. Decades ago there was an article (OGF, TMEN?) about a guy using
tractor inner tubes as batch reactors (cut to fill, put a tube or
cut-out bucket in the cut to reseal, no adding of material, just dumping
and refilling), keeping them warm by burying them in a compost pile.
That's probably the best practical approach to (sort-of) small-scale on
a budget. By having 3 or more one could be getting going, one producing
well, and one winding down, in sequence. Quite a bit of work to keep
that system up, however. I think I've seen that system described on at
least one web page.
Meanwhile I'm going to build a wood gasifier
and try to run a small engine with it. Then I'll see if I can feed my
propane BBQ with one. Next will be a small absorption refrigerator.

All good, feed it to that 12V generator. Just pay LOTS of attention to
the wood-gas warnings - this is similar to or the same as the older city
gas that would finish you off in a couple of lungfuls. Great care and
active gas detectors are required, as far as I can tell from my research
thus far.

omitted them in the count.
