I'm reposting this question again in the hopes that perhaps someone
has come across one of these remotes sitting on a shelf that perhaps
they might want to part with.

question

I picked up a 1983 GE model 1VCR4002X, (made by Panasonic, I think)
top load VCR for 2.00 at a thrift store. I know it probably sounds
silly but I really like these old top load machines and the bullet
proof way that they were bult. I never ran accross one with a wired
remote though, so this one is early. Anyway my intention was to set
this unit up at our camp this Summer to watch tapes mainly and to
occaisionally record something on one of the three channels we can
sometimes receive. I did all the mechanical work and the machine is
running fine but I never got the wired remote that went with this
model. I've seen them in the past though. They look like a standard IR
unit except there is a long wire and a mini plug on the end. Does
anyone know how these worked? Was it just a series of different
resistances which were selected by pressing the desired button or was
there something a bit more sinister going on? If possible I would like
to obtain one of these remotes or perhaps to set aside an evening of
boredom I'd assemble one in a bud box. Would anyone have a schematic
of whats inside the remote? Any assistance would be most sincerely

I think the early GE's were made by RCA...

A simple resistor pack with switches to load the internal (aprox.) 5
volt source coming from a decoder IC. Every resistor step corresponds
to a function, stop, play, ffw, etc. The decoder seems to be sensitive
to edge triggering and when it senses a wavefront it samples the
voltage level. The CPU gets its input lines toggled by the decoder to
initiate the various vcr functions. Pretty simple stuff but with a
handful of logic transistors acting as flipflops and gates. Just a sec
I'm taking the cover off one such control and measuring the voltages
for you (I use an old rca for its great tuner):

To the best of my measurement ability (jumpered dirty contacts)...

Source: 4.02V plug resistance

pause: 0.00 0.0K ohms
ch dn: 0.27 0.6K
ch up: 0.48 1.4K
stop: 0.72 2.3K
rew: 0.94 3.4K
ffw: 1.18 4.7K
record: 3.00 51.1K (must have play pressed)
play: 3.28 110.6K (14 pin resistor pack maximum)

Not all pins on the resistor pack are connected so there are
presumably other functions.

I can't measure the internal source resistance but according to the
plug resistance values it is roughly between 9K and 25K ohms.

One could I presume mount some resistors on a piece of perfboard and
relable a small keypad but perhaps an old unit might still be found?
