DVD - No Disc Error

My DVD player shows on the display that no disc is loaded (no disc) when
there is a disc inside.
I took the top off to have a look what was going on inside when I loaded a
dvd into the tray and it spins for a few seconds (display says reading)
before stopping, the display then shows 'No Disc'.
I'm hoping it is just an adjustment on the mechanical side of things.
Any help on this one?
TIA

2 possibilities, dirty laser lens, bad laser. If it's a fairly new unit, I'd
guess a bad laser.

You didn't post a model number or even a brand so there's nothing anyone can
do to help you. It's not a mechanical adjustment though, if it's a Sony
there's a surface mount fuse that often blows, otherwise check capacitors in
the power supply, beyond that it's probably a bad pickup and not worth
fixing unless it's a very expensive unit.

Is it a DVD-R your trying to play. Some machines wont play DVD-R or DVD+R
because the reflection from the surface of the disk is not enough to
correctly recognise a 1 or 0.

Brand? Model number? Without this it's hard to give any hints!

Here is the model number for those who feel it may help in any diagnosis.
Make is JMB sold in the UK - presumably under a different badge. The model
number is
JMBDVD3000.

I would hazard a guess that the optical pickup has gone south, which is almost
a typical problem that happens with no-name DVD players.

It may be more economically feasible to purchase a replacement player. To give
yourself better chances that the new player will last, buy only Sony, Toshiba,
Panasonic, Pioneer, or JVC DVD players. You'll spend a little more, but you do
get what you pay for. - Reinhart
