Recently I've found myself wanting to play classic games. SNES, NES, gameboy, etc. I have my raspberry pi playing all of those. The one that it won't play though, is Nintendo 64. This is currently only a thought but I hope to be able to make something that could play N64 games from ROMS not cartridges. Of course I could buy an old system but the games are quite expensive. I was thinking maybe I could use an old system and somehow mod it to play ROMs via SD card?

When you talk about "classic games," my first thought was chess that I played with my dad in 1950. Pinochle is also pretty good as is canasta. So far as I know, none of those games needed ROM's or cartridges.

Anyway, for more modern games (neoclassical?), have you checked forums that are more focused on Nintendo? One of the moderators of racketboy suggested nintindoage. Either should be able to help you.

ok so what you want to do is EXACTLY what you are doing on the pi? except you want to load the games via an sd card
heard of a USB sd card reader? this would fulfil all your base needs.
I have seen some projects that do this however.
having said that roms are illegal if you don't have the original game.... blah blah blah copyright jargon
