Charging 2x AA Batteries with 12VDC PSU

HI

I am planing on powering a couple of LED's from 2x AA rechargeable batteries, I would like to also incorporate a 12V power supply connection to charge them when they are running low.

What is the best way to achieve this, I am guessing that there will need to be someway of redirecting the power to LED's from the 12V once the batteries are fully charged so that they are not constantly charging.

Any help on this would be great.
