Ceiling fan 3 speed switch

my ceiling fan only is working in OFF and 1 speed.
where it should be 3 speeds.

what causes the 3 speeds?
is it the 3 leads from the transformer to the switch?
does each lead give it extra juice to make it run faster??

the transformer is burned out, shorted turns.
replace it.

Can you describe the location / appearance of this transformer? Most
ceiling fans use capacitors to control speed, not transformers.

older fans did use one wineding type transformers.
and yes the newer fan controls use a 3 wire cap
that has 2 caps inside at 2 diferent values that
effects the 2 lower speeds and a direct conection
for the high speed.
