Hi have been given a couple of Akura Retro Phono n BT Players and of course they don't work, where do I start to test voltages etc on it, getting 5vdc out of transformer and to the board, the battery is giving out 3.7vdc , don't realy know where to test for any voltages , tried to find a schematic etc for it, but no luck up to now.

I think you could try looking up the numbers on the chips and consult the related datasheets as you find those parts

I think @VenomBallistics was referring to the IC's on the board. Look up the datasheets and they will give you the pin configurations (if they are visible). Some manufacturers grind identifying numbers off.

Can you be more specific about
and of course they don't work
Are there any signs of life?
LED on?
Click when switched on? etc etc.

Hi
Thanks for your reply, on one of them the charging light comes on and a blue ( bluetooth ) led comes on then blinks and I can connect my phone to it, but then after a short time it goes off and only the charging light remains on, but no activity with the turntable motor activating !.
on the other one no lights come on .

cheers
Spike

Interesting.
Obviously the 4054 ain't cutt'n the mustard if both did a silicon to carbon conversion.
Thus, I wonder if there isn't a pin for pin equivalent of higher quality

Hi
Thanks for your reply, yes that would be good, the thing is there is lots of 4054 ending and begining with extra letters, these only have the 4054 stamped on them, so I really don't know what the make of these are !.

Cheers

after looking up a few of the other part numbers, I'll go with "dredged from the murky bed of the Yangtze river" brand.
just looked at Linear Technologies LTC4054's. about a buck and a half each USD. but they also seem to have a sample option for one of them. Not sure how generous their sample policy is, but free is great if they'll play. If not, it's still an upgrade at a very reasonable price point

Long ago in a different, now defunct forum, a guy with the handle "Tekwiz" put me onto manufacturer sample parts.
Nice option for things like this, because you get parts of provenance for free.
I found LT's policy
"Analog Devices offers a limited amount of free samples to qualified customers in selected countries/region. Most customers are limited to 2 pieces per part with a maximum of 4 parts per order with in a 2 week period."

The unit with no power at all, I'd be inclined to check the diodes near the power and battery connectors first.
