Acoustic slowness and shear

The project I am currently working on uses one sound source and four
receivers. With the source turned on, 4 receivers will receive 4 digitized
signal traces. Based on these 4 traces, a slowness value (delta-T) is
calculated and shear value is also calculated. Could anyone point me to
books or literatures on this subject -- calculation of delta-T slowness and
shear?

Maybe its what you get when you need to do the weeding but dont want
to? I'm guessing the OP might be testing characteristics of materials
by transmitting sound thru them, but really I can only guess.
