    low cost high resolution shaft encoder

    I am looking for a low cost high resolution shaft encoder to use in the feedback circuit of a closed loop stepper motor control circuit....all the ones i found range from hundreds to thousands of $$ any help is appreciated.... thank you in advance !

    PIC18F and PIC18C

    this might sound like a silly question, but what is the difference between a PIC18C542 and a PIC18F542, I know PIC18F is a more recent flash version of the PIC18, but practical wise, does it make any difference? Thanks in advance
