If you apply too much voltage, the voltage could arc around the resistor.
That's why high voltage probes that need a very large value resistor
either use very special resistors intended for the purpose, or a string of
resistors, so if there's arc-over, it won't go around the full value of
the resistors in series, just around one.

** Not likely at all.

Nearly all resistors are spirals of material (metal, carbon or composites)
around a ceramic rod - so any breakover will be between adjacent turns in
the spriral. This will probably ruin the part but it will not short end to
end.

A series string of resistors breaks the voltage applied to EACH resistor
down by the number of resistors, making much higher voltages tolerable.

Is it just me or does anyone wonder why this guy is obsessed with
components shorting. Maybe he has a different definition of shorting.
Oh well, back to my ale.

Do you three wanna talk about resistors or not? Or do you just wanna
pull your guns? :)

I don't care about their ranks! I come here to learn more about
resistors and previously LEDs.

So take this bullying crap back to your US schools and maybe military
barracks!

They may be trolling/bullying, or they may simply be fed up. You have an
apparent unwillingness to learn basics for yourself, or to listen to the
advice given free of charge.

Anyway, a lot of your questions could be answered quickly by a Google
search. A lot of the gap in your understanding could be filled by
reading a text book.

Did you ever perform the experiment I suggested about LEDs? A little bit
of lab experimentation beats the hell out of a text book and Google :).

Oh, and for the record, whether your intend it or not, your posting
behavior *appears* trollish. I'm not sure what advice I can give to you
that would help you avoid that, but perhaps just being aware could help
you. We are here because we like to discuss electronics, not because we
have any obligation to help you understand electronics.

I have no intention of bullying you or anyone else. You have been given
much help but you persist in asking the same thing over and over about
components shorting. What's your definition of a shorted component?

"Mr." Man-wai Chang is representative of what I see as an alarming
increase in these groups... "punks"... ignorant as a stump, but
pompously considering themselves as superior beings.

I represented nobody but myself!
If someone can locate "Mr." Man-wai Chang's kindergarten they should
give him a good spanking >:-}

Did you enjoy spanking others while being a kid?

What's wrong about looking at a problem from different perspectives? I
could discover something new doing so, notably discrepancies.

They almost always fail open.

In the old days of carbon composition resistors they might fail
shorted (or going lower in value) on rare occasions. This seemed to
be a problem unique to vacuum toob circuits where high voltage DC is
continuously applied across a high value carbon comp resistor. More
often than not, it would be a "screen" resistor, probably because
even with reduced resistance the current flow was minimal, and not
enough to cause it to burn.

Yup, I've seen this happen to carbon comp bleeder resistors across mains
filter caps as well. Eventually, as the resistance decreases enough, smoke
ensues.
