I am playing around with these RF modules I got off Ebay. These:

Ebay item #401183214030

are 315 MHZ. I tried a 1 foot 22 solid copper wire wound around a plain pencil, then hung loose, coiled length about 2 inches ... and that worked from my basement to my attic.

Just wondering if there is a better antenna style that could get me more range.
If you say 'make it 22 mm' do you mean total length, or length of the coil ???

9⅜" straight, stiff wire will make a ¼ wave dipole for that frequency or you could just buy one. They're readily available for that frequency.
