TV keeps putting itself into standby mode

My parent's in-law have a Hitachi 28 inch widescreen set which is
about 4 years old and after around a minute of bring turned on it will
put itself into standby mode. A few seconds later it will turn itself
back on.

I only have a limited knowledge of electronics, but can anyone suggest
what the fault could be and whether it is something a layman can
repair. If the fault was something related to the "standby mechanism"
and this could be disabled easily then that would be acceptable.

Any advice gratefully received

There is most likely some parts in the power supply or scan circuits that
have become temperature sensitive. Without the proper training and set-up,
this is going to be difficult for you to determine the failing parts and
change them. There are high voltages employed in these sets, and I would not
suggest for you to get in to the set, unless you were properly trained and
equipped for this type of work.
