We have a floor lamp and we replaced the lamp tube (below) at one point and after that the lamp tube started buzzing. A dimmer should include a coil to even out the pulses from the thyristor clipping action but it is probably not enough. Could I put in a capacitor to improve the filtering?

Did you replace the bulb with one of the same power or did you put a more powerful one in?

I presume that there is dimmer, details of this would help. An inductance may be the source of the buzz. Putting in a capacitor in some random position could be catastrophic.

I'd check the socket contacts to make sure they're making good contact. You're probably getting 50Hz 'buzzing' from the power line.

I think you bought a poor quality cheapo light bulb made "over there" instead of a high quality one made locally.
