The beginning of the end

Saturday, November 1 marked the beginning of the end of the traditional
incandescent light bulb in Australia.

From that date, standards were introduced which effictively ban the
importation of regular inefficient incandescent GLS light bulbs. Low
voltage halogen lamps and compact fluorescent lamps imported into the
country also have to comply. Those that are in Australia can be sold over
the next 12 months. Over the next few years, more kinds of lamps will have
to comply with the standard, including mains voltage halogen lamps,
decorative lamps, reflectors, etc.

There are some exemptions though. For example, GLS lamps of 150W or greater
are exempt.

Lamps for medical use are exempt as are lamps for photography, stage
lighting and some other specialised applications.

Low voltage lamps for electronics use, e..g. torches, car lights, etc. are
exempt I believe, with the exception of low voltage halogen lamps for
residential/commercial use.

The main focus is on lamps used for residential lighting and sometimes in
commercial lighting.

Full details are in AS/NZS 4934.2.
