In single phase power connection the voltage is 240 V and the maximum load can be given is 10 hp. My question is why the maximum load is restricted to 10 hp?

It isn't necessarily. Depending on wire diameter, fuses down the line etc. the limit may be higher or lower.

10 hp is equivalent to 7.46 kW ( the common unit for electical power) which in turn is equivalent to 31 A. Your local code may require a 32 A fuse for the mains leading to your place so that's one possible source of the 10 hp limit.

10hp usually defines the motive unit used to generate the energy. The engine driving the generator.

If you try to draw more power than the motive unit can deliver you will slow and/or stall the that motive unit.

As stated, 10hp equates to 7.5kW (or thereabouts) so drawing 8kW may cause the motive source (generator) to slow down, change the frequency/voltage of the output and, likely, cause the electrical circuit to trip to prevent damage.

The only other restriction on load is the cabling and fusing.

240 1ph service is mainly used in the area of residential supply, and 10HP represents a high single load for this kind of service,
Once you get above a demand of over 10HP for equipment, the more efficient method is to use 3 phase and a higher voltage, 360/420/575/600 etc. and would be considered industrial application.
