Remote Sensor

Hi all,
I have an old but hardly used JVC stereo receiver with 5 speakers.
When I tried to use it today, the remote seems not to work, changed the batteries, but still no good.
Manually the controls work fine. So I am guessing it could be the the remote sensor. How do I replace it and is there a universal remote that I can buy and test before I open it up and mess it further.

it could still ( and most likely) be the remote .... failing push buttons are the most common failure
most digital cameras can see the IR ( infrared ) signal from a remote

this will at least tell you if the remote is transmitting, not necessarily if it is transmitting correctly
