remote control; cheap; 2 channels of control; ideas?

Electronics hacker here. (Have electronics tech school background)

Can someone suggest a route, some ideas, on how to implement a cheap
remote control? I'd like something that offers a couple of discreet
signals to control simple "on/off" functionality.

Chipsets, modules; just starting this and need some basic ideas. I
can do the research - just point me. (First time ever working with
this kind of thing.)

Thank you very much.

I got two of these in the impulse bin at some drugstore or something,
for about two bucks apiece:

It's got forward/reverse, and right/left - that's two channels
with three states each. (off, 1, 2); I don't know if that's
really 4 channels or if the two have 3 states each.

I could send you one to hack, for a few bucks to cover "shipping
and handling". ;-)

Good Luck!

Hack an old R/C toy car. You get 4 functions -
forward, back, let, right. Have fun!
