There have been a few posts here regarding the quartz tube halogen element
radiant heaters that have recently become widely available.
I just acquired one myself and I thought it might be useful to share my
experience.
I was just interested in some 'local heat' as much as anything to keep my feet
warm when working at the PC. Until now I've been using a 'fan heater' set on its
lowest 1kW setting but was concerned a bit about the power consumption being
unnecessarily high.
I just purchased a 400/800W halogen heater from Focus DIY ( UK ) for £7.99.
I'm pleased to say that on its lower 400W setting it provides plenty of heat for
the purpose. Because I only need the heat 'locally' it's actually subjectively
warmer than the fan heater on 1kW which was using 2.5x as much energy !
Plus of course that means my electricity bills will now be that much lower.
Definitely a good result.
