new to circuitry

hey guys. as title says i'm new to this, working on a small project and would just like to press the button to turn off the led and release it to turn it back on. thanks in advance

All you need is a button with "normally closed" action (closed when released, open when pushed). Then connect everything in series.

Thanks for the reply. Is it possible i can get a diagram? I tried wiring this thing so many ways, i get the led to light but pushing the button doesn't turn it off

It looks like that switch is only "push to make" contact. You want a "push to break" switch.

But for this switch. Put your circuit to 1 and 3 Or 2 and 4.

So how exactly would i go about doing that? The 9v battery with resistor hooked up to pins 5 and 6? The led to 1 and 3 / 2 and 4? How much i gotta pay for a diagram?

Ok, first of all, you have a white 3v led in your diagram too. You will need a resistor of about 240 to 300 ohms for it too.

Yep i got right resistor for it, works fine hooked up directly to the 9v

Yes but, you need one for the switch led too.
Give me ten minutes and I'll give you some ideas to have the switch led constant and to turn on / off with the switch.

Break the standard way of thinking: This switch is make (normally open) ony. Therefore it is impossible to use it in a series configuration to turn off the LED when pressed.
If you cannot put the switch in series to the LED, which other connection is the next logical one? The answer is very simple and I could give it to you instantly, if you insist. However, I think it is a good exercise to find the solution yourself.

Hint: What I'm thinking of is normally considered to be a faulty connection.

I think i understand what you're saying. I've been trying to find the solution myself with no luck lol.. How can i wire it to achieve the desired effect?

Oops, Harold has replied. Here is a simple push to make that has the switch led on constant but switches your white led.

Sorry Martin, much too complex.

@Rock18 put the switch in parallel to the LED. When open, the LED will light. When pushed close, the switch will short crcuit the LED and the LED will consequently be off.

As I said: some out of the box thinking is reqired

Harold is saying to put the led across the switch.
You will need to connect battery to resistor and then the switch 1 . Now put led across 1 and 3. Then 3 back to battery negative.
The led will be on constant. When you press the switch, it will short the led and it will go off.

whoooo.. @Martaine2005 & @Harald Kapp thanks for the help.. figured it out.. my main problem in my initial trials was connecting the 9V straight to pins 5 and 6.. got it working now, can configure it so that the switch led stays on or turns off when clicked.. thanks again.. where do i send the check?!
