hi all this is my first post on this forum and i really need some help with the two components in the picture.

i'am restoring a regentone arg 80 radiogram from about 1956 to 1959 (inside the cabinet it is stamped 27 march 1956).

they positive and negitive on them and it says 100v DC WKG Pat pending 4MFDS max temp 60c B.E.C CE.221 electrolytic and on the other it is all the same apart from the voltage is 12v.

i thought it might be a capacitor but there isn't any capacitance units noted on them.

i really need some help here and am sorry for the bad picture i will try to get a better picture in the next few days.

thanks for any help in advance.

Hi there

welcome to EP :)

yes they are capacitors and 4MFD is the value
You cant buy xxMFD values these days and there is some ambiguity between manufacturers on the meaning of MFD

some use it as milliFarads, others used it as the same as microFarad (uF)

As you said poor pic, I cannot tell where in the circuit these are being used, maybe you can clarify that
you would probably get away with anything between 5.6uF and 10uF at the appropriate voltages

thanks for the reply dave.

i've managed to take some better pictures of the capacitors and of the whole thing.

one looks to be connected to the speaker, this would explain from why i'am not getting any sound from the radiogram.
i know that they are electrolytic capacitors but do i have to replace them with electrolytic capacitors??

also des it matter that the voltage of the replacements are higher that whats already in ??

and last question is that i can only find electrolytic capacitors with 10uf that suit the voltage, would this be fine or do i need them with a uf that is between the ratings you stated??

thanks for your help so far

matt

also the 12v capacitor doesn't say 4MFDS it says 25MFDS, what capacitor rating would i need for this one.

both of them seem to be used for the amp

would a 10uf be fine for the 100v and can the voltage listed on the capacitors be higher than ones already in

Simple answer is YES. The voltage can certainly be higher. In fact it is advantageous.
Just be aware that the size of the capacitor may hinder connection.

I forgot to say that @davenn was helping you. And I only answered because he was off-line. But generally going higher in the voltage will make the cap last longer and be more efficient.
