Need Design Project Advice

Hello everyone,

I am an electrical engineering student working on my senior design
project and what my group and I came up with was a security system to
monitor activity in a new building's design area. So far I have
developed a motion detection algorithm using MATLAB and a webcam,
however, we will be using actual security camera's for the design.

My question to anyone is what would be the best way to connect a
minimum of 8 camera's to a PC so that I can implement my algorithm on
them. I would need it to do is be able to select which camera I want
to check for motion (each camera having a unique device number) and
use MATLAB. With the research I have done so far, most of the
camera's that fits our budget have RCA cables.

I am not looking for someone to do my project for me, just some
advice.

Any idea's would be appreciated..

Thanks,

Kevin

Robert must buy from Radio Shaft.

| You can get RCA to BNC adapters for as little or as much as you like. A
| quick google produces the following results
|
| http://www.national-tech.com/catalog/rcacoaxialconnectors.htm $0.88
|
| http://www.smarthome.com/7809RB1.html
| $1.25
|
| http://www.ramelectronics.net/html/adapters-rca-bnc.html
| $3.25
|

Thanks for the quick response. The 8 channel cards
Ive researched wouldn't take RCA cables. I did see
some RCA to BNC converters, but they were $50 for
1.5 feet which doesn't fit into our budget.

RCA and BNC connectors are very inexpensive. So is
coaxial cable. Use ordinary RG59 cable for common
CCTV applications like this. Don't waste money on
RG6. The image quality will be identical.

Doug misled you (as usual). The link to my site
was not to the same product. It's a converter to
change from 1/4" phono to BNC.

No, I don't think I misled him, its just that you don't seem to know much
about the products you attempt to sell. In case you aren't aware, RCA
plugs are also known as phono plugs.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RCA_connector

And heres a link to another online vendor selling the exact same American
Dynamics part at less than half of what you have it listed for, compare the
image in this link with the images in the links in my earlier post.

If you still aren't sure, why not order one from yourself and see what it
looks like when it arrives from the distributor. You can always return it
for credit.

Hey...I've been wandering the Pointless Forest for the past 20 years or
so...if you mislead me I'd end up "found" - which, IMO, is an undesireable
result. :)

No, I don't think I misled him...

Sure you did and it was no accident.

We both know full well that "Phono"
refers to a 1/4" plug with a center conductor
and a sleave or a center conductor, a ring
and a sleave. Wikipedia articles are written
by anyone and everyone who feels like
contributing. Wikipedia is not an expert
source.

You also knew that the device I sell is not a
BNC to RCA connector which is what the
gentleman requested. It is also not the
same as the devices from competing vendors
to which you compared it.

As usual, your post was misleading and offered
nothing of use to the reader -- just another
dig because of personal differences between us.
It's a shame you have nothing better to offer.

At any rate, since I don't get much of a break
on connectors and cables I don't offer major
discounts on them the way I do with most of
the things guys like you sell (typically at
300% to 500% markup). That's why I didn't
bother offering to sell anything to the OP. If
he wanted something where my prices are
competitive I'd have said something.

FWIW, when I'm selling a system and the client
needs a few items that I know he can buy better
locally or even at one of my competitors I tell
him so. I've found customers really appreciate
it because they know I'm not trying to "sell
them the store" -- just what they need. You can
snipe all you like but it won't change a thing. I
still offer better prices and better support on my
major product lines than anyone else.

By the way, competition is getting lighter lately. In
addition to a certain individual who used to post
a lot of trash here, Nassau Security is now belly
up. Alpine is gone. Two of the larger California-
based online vendors have been seeking buyers
as well. Your pals have predicted my downfall for
about 8 or 9 years now. I'm still here. Most of
them are not, including many "brick and mortar"
alarm companies.

So keep on sniping. Every time you mention my
company you make Google think it's more important
and I get a few more visitors.

My post was helpful, it offered something of use to the reader, it offered
four sources, without comment, for the same basic connector, you have taken
umbrage and tried to make this personal because you have been caught yet
again trying to gouge the very market you claim to serve. and to make it
worse you are now deliberately lying to cover up your lack of product
knowledge.

The part you list for $7.61 is the same as the other sources I referenced
listing for as little as 88 cents, no matter how many times you say it
isn't.

http://cctvpros.com/Product/6628/AD...ack=/products/All/720-Connectors/5/20page.htm

http://www.national-tech.com/catalog/rcacoaxialconnectors.htm

why don't you call American Dynamics and ask them ?.

You blabber on about installation companies marking up product 300-500%
while you list $18 baluns for $86 and 88 cent connectors for almost $8. At
least if I mark something up 300% I know what it is and what its used for.

Your "downfall" has nothing to do with your business.

It's more about hitting your head on the way down.
