Can anyone recommend a low pin count music/sound synth chip that can be
driver by SPI or another serial protocol? I need to add the capability to an
8 bit micro and have looked all over the net without much success.

Maybe the PCD3312, 8 pin with I2C interface. It does DTMF, modem tones and
musical notes.
