Dear group,

Can anyone explain what is the difference between "maintained" &
"non-maintained" emergency luminaires?

Thanks

For a typical fluorescent lamp luminaire with emergency lighting conversion:

Maintained version: The lamp is operated on normal mains control-gear when
mains is healthy, and switches to battery-powered (inverter) operation when
mains fails.

Non-Maintained version: No mains control-gear fitted in luminaire. Lamp is
not illuminated when mains supply is present, but when mains fails, lamp
operates from battery powered inverter.

HI Guys

I have heard of a Sustained emergency light too but I am not sure if they
are for central battery system which is about 24 or 50 volts

I think the use of sustained has ceased.
A maintained luminaire is one where the same light source (lamp/tube/led) is
used for mains healthy illumination as in the mains failed (emergency) mode
i.e. the light output is maintained by the same light source.
Non maintained is a mains failed (emergency) only light source i.e.
illuminates just in the emergency mode.

A sustained luminaire has (had) different light sources for the mains
healthy and mains failed (emergency) illumination
e.g a mains 'bulb' and a low voltage (battery operated) emergency bulb in
the same luminaire.
