is there a way to use an external speaker instead...

yes, take the output from the headphone socket to an external amplifier

and do I need to add an amplifier?

unless they are tiny low powered (1-3Watts) speakers, yes

I'm very new to this so if you have any recommendations could you please add in a few 'how to steps' if you don't mind. much appreciated!!

have a look on ebay or amazon for "low powered amplifier modules

something like this?
https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Fre..._7&btsid=ba4d1758-63e7-4c06-becc-404b97673648

I'm just not sure how I power it or connect to the bluetooth module from here...?

yup :)

Although it doesn't say, I'm assuming the BT module is stereo ?
so you will need 2 of those amp modules for a stereo amplifier :)

just take signal lines from the headphone socket to the 2 inputs of the
amplifier modules..... 3 wires, left channel, right channel and ground

and you need, as suggested in your link a 24V power supply and with 2 modules, you will need 4 Amps rather than 2A

so again search for 24V 4A power supplies :)
