Hey guys,
Ive got this LCD screen in a laptop which has this about 1-1/2 inch
thick "lighter bar" running up and down vertically on its screen. The
screen displays the colors that it supose to behind the bar except that
they are drastically lighter. Anyone know what the cause of this might
be and how to fix it? thanks!

Does the monitor have an external power supply ? If yes, I'd try it on
another one first. Also, have you checked that it's not coming from the
controller ( tried the monitor and signal cable on another computer - yes
? ) From the photo, the most likely bet would be one of the secondary
smoothing caps at the back end of the power supply. It will be something
like 1000 to 2000uF at 25v, and located just after the switching
transformer. Unless it's showing obvious signs of distress, you would need
an ESR meter to prove a problem, or at least a 'scope.

If you are not familiar with or confidant of the dangers of switch mode
power supplies, take extra care, as they are potentially lethal, once apart.
If it is an external power supply, and you prove it to be the cause of the
problem, you might want to consider just replacing it with one of the many
quite inexpensive generic ones available from the major parts suppliers.
