Li ion battery quirks

A few Qs....

1. Do Li ion batteries suffer from memory effect?

2. Is it best to fully cycle these batteries or keep topping them up
with charge?

I have a new toy (camera) with a Li ion battery and want to get
maximum life out of it as the replacements are expensive.

Cheers

** If they do they would be the **only** cells that exhibit the mysterious
effect

2. Is it best to fully cycle these batteries or keep topping them up

** That is Q1 over again - isn't it ?

** Failure and self destruct mechanisms are inherent in all rechargeable
cells and batteries ( there is a distinction - some mechanisms do not exist
for one cell applications ) - the details are not fully published by cell
makers and vary widely from brand to brand and even batch to batch.

** BTW Why the heck does everyone think that batteries are part of
electronics ??????

They were around long before electronics was ever though of or the term was
even coined.

They are designed and manufactured by the chemical industry - same a dyes,
paints and explosives.

The finer details of their design like any inherent problems is kept a
commercial secret known only to a few chemical engineers who are telling
no-one.

** Try a Google Groups search ( Advanced Search ) on
"sci.chem.electrochem" or " sci.chem.electrochem.battery " for lots of
erudite stuff on the topic.

Or it is as close to the most appropriate aus.* group he could find.

Duh.

They are designed and manufactured by the chemical
industry - same a dyes, paints and explosives.

Even you must have noticed that plenty of electronic devices use them.

problems is kept a commercial secret known only
to a few chemical engineers who are telling no-one.

And there are general questions like the one he asked
that are specific to the particular battery technology.

** It is a nice sunny day in Sydney, the air is very dry though.

** Add a few more and you can sing it.

** The subject is called "electrochemistry" - see the NGs I
suggested.

No, according to available data I have seen, life expectancy is increased if
they are kept around half chage. Nothing to do with "memory effect"

Phil why did they let you out, you are far from cured.

Some completely unemployable fuckwit claiming to be
Phil Allison <[email protected]> desperately
attempted to bullshit its way out of its predicament in message
and fooled absolutely no one at all. As always.

Lithium ion batteries have a relatively short life, hope you are going to
be using that camera a lot or else you are wasting money.

They do not self discharge to the same extent as other battery types,
this is good as you can leave it sitting for a while

Lithium ion batteries have a relatively short life,

Your experience (or reference sources) must be totally different from mine.

Typically three years and 500-1000 full cyles is my experience. And I have a
Li-Ion pack in an Acer Travelmate 370 dating from (pulls lappie out) "9637" so
that's coming up to EIGHT years, and it still dleivers over 2/3rds of its
original endurance.

So it depends on what you define as relatively short.

As it said in the referenced article, 2-3 years is a typical life.

Yep, they think 40% is a good figure,

** For long term storage purposes only - ie no bloody use to the OP.

He wants to USE his digital camera regularly !!

pretty close to the "around half" that I stated.

** Hey, if you don't use them at all and keep them in the fridge they will
last for yonks !!

Even non-rechargeable last years and years that way too.

TonyP ( aka Trevor the pedantic idiot ) is really onto something
here - folks.

So do I, and DON'T recharge after every use.
If he just wants to keep them fully charged, he wouldn't have asked the
question in the first place!

Some even more so than LiOn too.
