Isn't that what an Ohmmeter does? Not arguing with you, but I would like to know why and Ohmmeter would be unreliable.

It is considered more reliable test, an ohm meter is very low current and the the brush content and contact and any comm carbon film can affect the very low current reading.

Okay, that makes sense. Even better would be to measure the coil directly if you could get to it.

Not really, because now you don't have the total resistance that comes into play such as brush carbon resistance, which varies greatly with composition, copper content etc.
