I've heard a lot of rough statements, but no hard figures for life
expectancy.
Is it enough to replace the engine, or is wearout reflected all through the
machine?

Sorta depends on how you treat it. I have an 20 year old Pincor that runs
just fine. The top end of the motor was rebuilt about 10 years ago. I use
Amsoil in it now. The idle adjustment needs a little help occasionally. It
looks like it has been used, but that is ok for me.

3600 rpm with synthetic oil run easy 2500-4000 hrs.
