how is this resistor relevant? (noob question)

the 10kOhm resistor: why is it blocking current to pin 7? its not in the way

it isn't


Whilst I was searching the datasheet for more info, bluejets has responded with part of the situation

here's my Q to you @haggai shapira --- why would you comment on that one on pin 7 but not the same situation on pin 2 ??

The resistors are making the input on pin 2 and pin 7 low when the button is not pushed. If they were not there, the pins would be floating. A floating pin is NOT the same as pin connected to low. On some types of logic, a floating pin can actually disrupt the operation of the entire chip.
