Generating electricity from cell phone tower transmissions

Someone I was communicating with online , happened to mention their bedroom was 30 meters from a cell tower.

I flippantly suggested he may be able to use the transmitions as a source of power , a coil of wire should be able to light a small led wired in series with it , perhaps a capacitor across the led to even things out .

Am I correct ? what would be a good coil diameter ?

you are not the first to have thought of this
the amount of power available for harnessing is absolutely tiny .... micro volts

Power is measured in micro volts?.... Sure it would be tiny, but enough for a small led me thinks.

WOW... I am really sorry to say that he is most likely to get cancer or leukemia rather than electrical power being so close to such tower.

I'd be surprised if there were much energy to harvest or cause health problems if you're that close to the tower. The antennae are highly directional in the vertical plane, so you'd probably be in a radio 'shadow'.

Seeing as the cell phone transmissions are microwaves, why not use them to cook your food?

no it wont unless you are standing right beside the antenna
... do you know how much a LED needs to work ?

Just tried a small one from a 12v supply shows a light with over 1Mohm in series (2.7 voltage drop across led)
V=IR .....12-2.7 =I x 1000000 I= 9.3 micro amps P= IV = 9.3x2.7= 25 microWatts

So a small led will give light when consuming 25 micro watts (ten to the minus 6)= 0.000025Watts

but it's the micro Volts ;) ... try the same thing with only 25uV

it's not going to work as u need the ~ 2.7V minimum to get the LED to light up

Voltage is not a problem ,you just increase the number of turns in the coil till you get it as high as you want.

that's not going to produce additional power ... as doing that is going to increase the resistance of the coil and negate any gains
