You could do a "Basic Stamp" (http://www.parallax.com/) project with ease!

On the bright side, I'm sure he thinks he's an excellent driver...

I'd stick to 'lower case' projects, as there's where your talent
lies.

I definitely think that one of those "project type projects" is the
way to go. They're the best kind.

This would be a good question to ask your TA or professor. Asking them that
question will help you establish a relationship with them. That will be
very important both in terms of successfully completing the project, and in
terms of having someone to give you a job recommendation.

And Matthew, "when in Rome do as the Romans." Engineers are paid in part
for their ability to communicate their ideas clearly, so they tend to write
more formally than people in chat rooms do; you'll get better answers from
them if you use their language.

Take a course in English grammar and composition.

I'm not kidding. If you can't produce correct written English, most of the
career path is closed to you. You can get an entry-level job that doesn't
require writing, but you can't get promoted.

True and very unfortunate. The whole world is victim of British/American
tediousness.

Just as they are victims of British/American technology. Why don't
they just swear off both?

OTOH a career in management would seem to a viable option.

Nonsense! It's all about trying to make yourself understood. OTOH, some
people are lazy and assume it's the reader's obligation to understand.
You figure out which side you're on.

I presumed he wanted a career in England! Naturally, in other countries he
should master the local language, whatever it is. And I often find myself
wishing I could read Japanese.

Well said!

The rules of punctuation, capitalization, etc., are not made up by English
teachers and snobs to torture us. They exist in order to make it easier to
read.

And it's very important to cross the bridge and decide that you want to make
life easier for the reader, rather than for yourself (the writer). I think
that is actually a basic step in character development.

Inability to express yourself accurately and succinctly is a deficit. Ppl don't
like reading reams of poorly worded, misspelt unpunctuated rambling. It will
adversely affect your ability to communicate effectively which is paramount.

Example of dry tech-speak. No sentence > 12 words in this case.

These days, Chinese would be handy too ! I gather than Cantonese is likely to
be a better bet over Mandarin for techs.

How do you figure that?

Cantonese is more widely spoken in the South - indeed around Canton - and HK too
- where much of the industry is located.

There's little modernisation in the North of China.

Having said that - I've been in a meeting where English, Cantonese and Mandarin
were all being spoken.
