GE do it again:

Imminent closure of the birthplace of many HID/incandescent lighting
innovations. A very sad day indeed for the UK lighting industry. I have many
happy memories of my frequent trips to the labs over the last 28yrs both as
a member of the engineering staff and later as a customer. I learned much
from the talented and enthusiastic engineers and scientists there, who after
all wrote many of our lighting textbooks still used today.
The closure of Leicester was of course on the cards from the day GE took
over, lathough the labs and manufacturing lines only really started to be
wound down in earnest dutring the mid/late '90s, to the point at which it
really felt like visiting a ghost town; silent empty offices & labs, paint
peeling from corridor walls, and a general air of abandonment.
A sad end indeed and of course a bleak future ahead for the remaining
employees.
