Do protective diodes on FET's make FET's one dirctional switches

One direction is already open due to the diode. So to make a two directional switch, one needs two FET's.

Correct, yes. Connected in series (not in parallel as in analog switches).
Have a look at AC photomos relays, they have exactly that kind of internal circuit.
