differences between A-Law and mu-LAW?

Hi all

Can any one explain the differences between the above? I cant find any
information from the data sheets of the tp3057 and tp3054 the explain this.

The segments differ in size and number.

This is defined in ITU-T recommendation G.711, which is available from
the ITU-T in a number of formats.

Note that A law signals have the even bits inverted.

basically the difference is the equation used to perform the
companding (compression and expanding). The choice is more by
standard and convention as to where it is used. For more information
than this TI apnote has... check some old digital telephoney textbooks
from the mid/late 80's.
