You are a fucking idiot. It is simple to set up capacity checking in a
lab. DC electronic loads are easy to build. It is a reference, an op
amp, and a fucking power fet. A comparator is used to turn off the cheap
mechanical clock. Doing two dozen tests at a time is no big deal if you
need the data. This is especially true when determining the
effectiveness of top off schemes.

Hi miso, I'm not sure what's idiotic about it. (I'll ignore the F-bomb)
This was for home/ hobby use. At the time my brother and I were doing a lot of (electric) RC car racing. Some battery packs would 'go bad'. And I'dtake 'em apart find the bad cells and then try and mix and match some 'new' packs. At the time I didn't have access to much automated test gear, so relatively crude home measurements were all I had. I think Phil's point was that this would also work for the OP... though I'm risking an outburst putting words in Phil's mouth.

Yep. My guess(tm) is that the original 1000 ma-hr battery is NiCd,
while the 1700 ma-hr replacement is NiMH. Better specs through
chemistry.
