Hello,

I have a circuit that uses a MT8880C to create DTMF tones. I want to
interface this with the telephone system - to do this I'll need a DAA
chip, right??

I don't need any fancy features - just the ability to transmit analog
frequencies ( the tones I'm dialing on the MT8880) and some way to
pick up / hang up the phone. Can anyone suggest a simple, cheap DAA??

A Data Access Arangement doesn't have to be solid state. There are many good
telephone line coupling transformers out there and they naturally do the 2
to 4 wire hybrid conversion. Marry that with a double pole relay and you
have your DAA.
