Hi,
Powered up like this,
Red & Yellow wire joined together outside of radio with positive supply.
Black also joined outside of radio with negative power supply.
Readings taken from brown side circuit board as in photo

JW201 = 12.22v
JW202 = 12.23v
JW216 = 12.22v
JW217 = 12.22v
JW215 = 12.23v
JW214 = 12.22v
JW394 = 12.22v

OK so power is getting well into the system

when I get a chance today we will look at output pins of the regulator chip and check voltages there
I have a hospital visit for the first 1/2 of the day so wont be till later on in the day for me ... and that depends on how much there is to do at work

OK just deleted a lot of off topic stuff for a tidy up

your next mission is to measure a bunch of voltages and see how they compare with the diagram
all the different ground pins are actually commoned so you could put the negative meter probe on pin1

board pin ID

reg pin ID.JPG

just give a long list of pin 1 to pin 37 of the voltages you measure

Be extremely careful not to short out adjacent pins on the regulator IC with the multimeter probe ... otherwise it will be all over

Hi,
So negative probe on pin 1 then positive probe on 2 take a reading then 3 take a reading correct ?

If so i dont see the way the numbering system works looking where you have marked 1,2,36 & 37.

As a guide can you tell me the pin numbers where my 2 arrows are shown.
I mean the numbers dont go along the bottom 1,2,3,4, etc then the top row 22,23,24 etc,understand ?

Here we go.
My number system shown below.
I first did a reading and shown in green.
Then just to be sure i did it again as shown in blue.

so they are very different values to my supplied diagram, aye

basically one of 2 reasons
1) the reg chip is faulty
2) the microprocess that controls the reg chip isn't doing it's job

1) would be the easiest repair and hope that it solves the problem
2) would be almost impossible for home electronics and not much easier for a skilled tech in a workshop with the correct gear

Can you show me on my photo which items are we talking about please

the regulator chip is what you finished measuring all the voltages on and even it would be a challenge to remove without damaging circuit tracks

the main micro controller is that big black chip 1/2 way down the board ( roughly in the middle of the board)

ohhh and not sure why you got a totally different set of voltages second time around ?
what did you do different ?
Then just to be sure i did it again as shown in blue.

I assume you did keep the negative meter probe on pin 1 ALL the time ?

Neg on pin 1 then pos on each other.

I bet if i did it again now it would be different again.

So this item is the reg chip ?
If so will there be numbers on it so i can look for a new one ?

OK good

I bet if i did it again now it would be different again.

no idea why

So this item is the reg chip ?

yes .... it will separate from that metal bracket ... which is just a mounting bracket

it's a TDF8556AJ/N3/M5

Ohhh ... just discovered that it is also the main audio amplifier chip .... never seen a combination like that before

Ok
I will look around.

Doing the readings again would be sods law it would be different.,
I will keep you informed.
Thanks

Sir ipbr21054a. . . . . . . .

On your main connector block / plug at the rear of the radio . . . its a given that BLACK is the ground reference and RED is the main DC power input .

CONNECTOR:
Sony Radio PWR Connector.png

That reflects continuity by your being able to activate power action to the player.
Plus all power points on the just measured TDF8856 power audio superchip reflect the MAIN 12VDC presence.

Can / did you now check the YELLOW wire coming into that plug to see if 12VDC is present on it also ?
Its presence trips a logic function that turns on the audio preamplifier and audio activation function.

Hi,
Please tell me exactly you wish me to put my test probes.
I can then do as you say.

Thanks

not sure what differences there are between the .....
TDF8556AJ/N3/M5 and the TDF8556AJ/N5/M5 ??
